Denver Parks Gives Flower Tours For Gardeners
Denver Parks and Recreation Department is set to host its first “Buds-To-Blooms” garden tour series to show gardeners how to design their flower beds and care for their plants.
The series consists of three tours, all of which are hosted on different dates.
Ronn Neath, a horticulturalist with the Parks and Rec department, spoke with CBS4 about the tours on Sunday morning. He said the series is intended to help gardeners of all levels.
“Anything you want to see you’re going to see on these tours,” Neath said.
Tour goers will be exposed to a variety of flowerbed designs.
The first tour, the Marigold Tour, covers the southwest part of the city and is on July 29.
The second tour, the Rose Tour, covers the central and northeast parts of the city and will be held on Aug. 5.
The third and final tour, the Geranium Tour, focuses on rivers and trails as well as the northwest part of the city on Aug. 12.
“The city produces about 205,000 flowers per year and we have about 620 flower beds that they go in,” Neath said.
Most gardeners probably wonder how the flowerbed designs turn out so perfect, but Neath said it’s not always so easy.
“We design our stuff and put it together, we don’t know if it’s actually going to look good,” Neath said. “My suggestion is don’t clump a bunch of stuff together. Less is more in my ideas.”
These extensive tours are a chance for gardeners to ask questions so they can try things out on their own gardens.
Gardeners will likely find answers to common questions about watering, fertilizing and weeding.
“The earlier you water the better … if you water in the middle of the day obviously the water is going to evaporate and your ground is not going to get wet,” Neath told CBS4 when he was asked how to keep flowers from wilting.
“I use a liquid fertilizer,” Neath said. “The granular fertilizer is still good but it still has to break down for it to get into the soil.”
“Make sure you weed because if you don’t weed your flowers it’s going to strangle the flowers out,” Neath said weeding is the most important part of it all.
A single tour costs $15 for adults and $7 for seniors and children. There is a special price for all three tours.
