Maymont may give up running of flower show
Maymont Park may be handing its annual flower and garden show over to someone else.
James McLauglin Sr., chief executive at Mac Events, said yesterday that he hopes his company will begin producing the show in February.
Jim Starkey, president of the Maymont Foundation’s board of directors, said that costs have risen for the Maymont Flower and Garden Show, “and there’s a huge amount of staff time involved in the event.”
Maymont spokeswoman Kate Brown said the nonprofit organization is “in good conversations with Mac Events. We are really excited that we may have found a way to continue the show.”
McLauglin said he does not envision a lot of changes. The show’s name would remain the same, and the event would continue to be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The 18th annual show is scheduled for Feb. 22-25.
“This is a well-established show,” said McLauglin, whose New Jersey-based company produces the Boat Show and Home Show in Richmond. “Maymont has done a tremendous job over the years. It isn’t broken, so we don’t need to fix it.”
But show attendance has been declining. In 1996, more than 28,000 people attended. Last year, about 14,000 did.
Keith Peck, president of Peck Hardscapes in Richmond, has set up a landscape display at the show for six years. The first year, he said, it generated about $300,000 in business for his company. Last year, he said, he spent about $15,000 on his display and lost several thousand dollars.
Producing the show has been costly for Maymont, too. Expenses for the 2004 show — the last year for which figures were available — were nearly $400,000. Maymont grossed about $500,000 that year.
