Flower and vegetable show attracts hundreds of visitors
A flower and vegetable show is blooming.
The 88th annual Haworth, Oxenhope, Lees and Cross Roads Gardeners’ and Allotment Holders’ Association show – held on Sunday – was one of the most successful of recent years. Despite poor weather, over 300 people attended the event at Haworth Community Centre.
The quality of the produce, particularly in the vegetable and baking sections, was high.
Refreshments were served and there were tombolas and raffles.
Organisers say the show’s success was due largely to generous donations from sponsors and the friendly spirit of the competitors.
Before the trophy presentation, committee member Eric Bates thanked the exhibitors, committee, helpers and all those who attended.
Secretary Eric Brown expressed special thanks to the sponsors and to committee member Geoff Wilkins for his efforts raising sponsorship money. The trophies were presented by president David Lamb.
Star performers again included Stephen Thorpe and pupils from Haworth Primary School, who won the Silver Challenge Cup for most points in the flower section and the Jack Cunningham Trophy for most points in cut flowers. Brian King won the Silver Challenge Cup for most points in the vegetable section.
The association is seeking new members. Anyone interested is invited to attend the annual meeting at Haworth Youth Hostel, Longlands Drive, on October 7 (1pm). Further details can be obtained from Mr Brown on 01422 845110.
