Organic livestock farmers to trade ideas at U
An organic farmer tending cattle in Sweden may have tips to share with an organic pig farmer in Germany, who may learn a thing or two from a poultry farmer using herbal medicines in India — but how to share their knowledge?
Starting today at the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus, such people will meet for the first time under the auspices of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, which boasts members in 108 countries.
“There’s a lot of age-old wisdom and good practices that keep animals healthy that have been used for years, but there’s also a lot of new practices and new information and sound scientific research,” said organizer Jim Riddle, the University of Minnesota’s organic outreach coordinator.
Professors, farmers and livestock experts from India, Sweden, Serbia, Germany and elsewhere are scheduled to attend. For information about the conference, go to www.startribune.com/a1667. Thursday night’s keynote speech is by Dr. Temple Grandin, the author of the bestselling book “Animals in Translation.”
