Anthurium Andreanum Grp. Sierra Planting Success
The Sierra cultivar launched last year is living proof of the fact that an Anthurium plant from the Andreanum Group can be beautifully compact.
Many cultivars in this group have a strong tendency to grow wild but Sierra stays beautifully compact, even if it is grown in a 17 cm pot. The six to ten, fiery red flowers, each with a yellowish white spadix, appear above the foliage like an attractively compact bouquet. In short, a houseplant with impeccable self control. Not only that, but Sierra is very long lasting.
The auction figures prove that Sierra (vbn code 25369) has lots of appeal. The Anthurium was first launched in September 2005. In the same year 7,000 were sold at auction for an average price of 6.45 euro. Between January and the end of August 2006 no less than 37,000 Sierras were sold for an average price of 5.25 euro, which is still strikingly high. The drop in price was due to the fact that the plants were supplied in 14 cm pots alongside the 17 cm pots.
There is no doubt that the bushy, compact plant contributed to this success. In a 14 cm pot Sierra grows to about 45 cm in height and in a 17 cm pot to between 50 and 60 cm. The unusual thing here is that each pot size is supplied by a different grower. The Sierra in the 17 cm pot is supplied under the name ‘Premiumline mix’, along with 8 other Anthurium cultivars. The Sierra is also suitable for use in a 20 cm pot, but these are not yet being supplied. source : www.flowercouncil.org
