How To Prepare, Plant and Care Christmas bulbs
Buy hyacinth bulbs specially prepared for early flowering. These have been kept kept at carefully controlled temperature and humidity levels since being lifted from nursery growing fields.
Planting
Buy the bulbs in early autumn (September) and plant immediately. Place moist bulb fibre at the bottom of a bulb bowl or pot. Set the bulbs on it so that they do not touch each other or the sides of the pot. Fill around with fibre to about 1cm (0.5in) from the pot rim, with the bulb tops just showing.
Care
Place in cool, dark conditions. Check regularly, keeping the fibre just moist. Leave until the shoots are 4-5cm (1.5-2in) high with the flower spikes visible and just beginning to show colour. This is usually after eight to 10 weeks, depending on variety. Then bring the pots into good light but not direct sunlight.
Problems
The main reasons for poor results are: removing the bulbs too soon from cool, dark conditions; too dry or too wet fibre; dark conditions not cool enough.
Other bulbs
Try daffodils, such as Narcissus ‘Paper White’. Grow as for hyacinth to flower January/February.
Plant hippeastrums in October to flower January/February. After planting keep in a warm, light room until flowering ends. [source : www.rhs.org.uk]
