Are you bitter or a sweetheart on Valentine’s Day?
The story goes that Valentine was a Roman priest during the third century when the emperor at the time, Claudius II, decreed that single men made better soldiers than married ones, and so abolished the practice of marriage. But Saint Valentine secretly married young couples anyway, and when his actions were discovered, he was put to death. Somehow this story of courage and an uncompromising belief in love, inspired the orgy of cards, candy and flowers that we have come to expect on Saint Valentine’s Day. How do you handle the day dedicated to love? 1. There’s a knock on the classroom door. It’s time for flower deliveries and — surprise! You got one. It’s from your: a) Best friend b) Secret admirer c) Boyfriend/girlfriend 2. Your reaction to flower deliveries is a) Embarrassed. Plus, you’ll have to walk around with that flower all day. b) Surprised. You really weren’t expecting one. c) Happy. You knew you’d get one! 3. The day before Valentine’s Day, you prepare by a) Sulking and wishing the holiday was never invented. b) Mustering up the courage to confess your love to your long-time crush. c) Planning a romantic night out with that special someone. 4. What would be the perfect Valentine’s Day gift? a) You don’t really know. You could care less about the holiday. a) Something fun like heart-shaped balloons or candy. b) Something romantic like roses, a cute teddy bear or significant jewelry. 5. If your boyfriend/girlfriend didn’t buy you a Valentine’s gift, how would you react? a) No gift?! Schedule a breakup for that same night. b) Be a little upset, but get over it after a while. c) It doesn’t matter, after all, the holiday is about love, not just gifts. 6. Candy hearts are: a) Stupid, plus they don’t even taste that great. b) Adorable, the little messages are so cute. c) Meaningful. Plus, they could actually be true! 7. When you watch made-for-TV Valentine’s Day movies, you: a) Gag. Who comes up with these sappy story lines anyway? b) Hope that stories like those will actually come true. c) Wonder if maybe the script was taken straight out of your life. 8. At the end of Valentine’s Day, you are a) Happy! Thank God that’s over! b) Hopeful. Maybe next year you’ll find your true love. c) Anxious to see what your boyfriend/girlfriend will plan for next year.
