February good for romance, not weddings
Proposals are a dime a dozen on valentine`s day but what about weddings?
Before couples say “I do”, they have to make a trip to the County Recorder of Deeds Office.
That`s where one woman said, Valentine`s Day happens year round.
For almost 30 years, Karen Higginbotham has been helping couples in Buchanan County tie the knot.
“You can say we`re cupid only a little more expensive than cupid,” Higginbotham said.
She said she can always spot a couple in love.
“They have a certain look in their eyes,” Higginbotham said. “It`s not that they`re not hearing what they`re saying it`s just that their mind is elsewhere.
At the Recorder of Deeds Office copies of marriage licenses go as far back to the 1800`s; there are millions of them. Higginbotham has issued a few hundred herself.
Contrary to what many think, February is only good for romance not marriage.
“June is your biggest month, and then May follows and then August,” Higginbotham said.
Higginbotham and her staff have heard all types of love stories.
“We had two couples that were here for a license and while they were here, and they got married while they were here,” Higginbotham said.
Fifty-one dollars cash will get you hitched. Along with a valid ID, proof of age and social security number and if you can wait three days, you`ll be married by this week.
In 2006, the recorder of deeds issued more than 650 marriage licenses. On the other side of the coin, the circuit clerk said some 400 people filed for divorce in the same year.
