Flower shops brave the cold to make special deliveries
Mother Nature couldn`t even come between hundreds of people getting a special delivery from loved ones on this Valentine`s Day.
Messengers of love don`t let a little slip slow down deliveries.
Bob Kelly is just one of seven people playing cupid volunteering his time to share warm feelings on this cold day.
“I don`t remember a quite this cold Valentine’s Day,” Kelly said. “The worse I can remember is 22 inches of snow and the only way I could go is with 4 wheel drive trucks.”
At Butchart’s Flowers they planned ahead to make sure everyone gets their deliveries of love. They mapped out routes for drivers, putting schools at the top of the delivery list.
“If they let out early that happens to us, we`re surprised that they`re even going to school,” Gary Butchart said.
Flower shops are keeping all flowers double wrapped in plastic to survive the cold.
“The drivers can only stand at the door for so long with the flowers,” manager of Butcharts Flowers Inc., Teresa Bally, said. “So they`re being very careful about making sure they`re not out in the cold. Even though we keep flowers in a cooler they cant be usually below 40 to 45 degrees.”
Due to flowers being fragile in frigid temperatures they can’t go below the 40’s.
“It will just kill them,” Kelly said. “Red roses turn black.”
To make the love last all recipients are left with special care instructions.
“If you decide to take them home tonight or if it`s freezing, when you take them home cover them back up with the plastic,” Kelly said.
All this to make sure that not even Mother Nature will block lover`s lane.
“We can`t let it slow us down at all,” Bally said.
Butchart`s had about 500 deliveries throughout the Midland Empire on Valentine`s Day.
Deliveries began at 8 a.m. and are expected to be finished by 7 p.m.
