Danish design is in the detail
An exhibition of Danish design opened on Friday in the Office of Public Works (OPW) on St Stephen’s Green, Dublin.
Danish Detail, designed by interior designer Angie O’Brien, showcases ‘‘some of the top brands in Danish design’’ such as unique carpets and the ‘egg chair’.
The exhibition consists of a themed environment, engaging sight, sound and touch. It is a collaboration between the Royal Danish Embassy and Detail Furniture. ‘‘Its purpose is to give an insight into the quality and functionality of modern Danish design and applied arts,” said O’Brien.
‘‘In this presentation and exhibition, you will have the possibility of familiarising yourself not only with some of the best products Danish industry can deliver, but also the chance to learn a little bit of the background and history of these products.”
Seven Danish interior design firms are represented at the show: Bang & Olufsen, Borks, Ege, Republic of Fritz Hansen, Kvadrat, Louis Poulsen and Randers.
‘‘Irish students from design and architecture schools are being encouraged to visit the exhibition to get a fresh understanding of design themes and motifs which have become internationally acknowledged,” said Henrik Ree Iversen, the Danish ambassador to Ireland.
To accompany the exhibition, Danish Detail is hosting a number of talks from experts in their respective fields. The programme so far has included John Small from Foster Partners which designed the ‘Gherkin’ building in London.
Talks throughout the week will be given by companies such as Jehs & Laub (February 19,5.30pm), which has developed an innovative ‘lounge series’ for Fritz Hansen; Andy Gosney (February 20,1.15pm) from Ege carpets who will be talking about ‘advanced carpet solutions’; and lighting expert Ulla Riemer (February 20,3pm) from Louis Poulsen Lighting.
