Sask. Ave. park project designs completed
The designs for a park along Saskatchewan Avenue have been completed.
Mel Annand with the Sask. Ave. Park Project made a presentation to Melfort City Council about the project on Monday, Feb. 12.
“The point of the park is to make it (Sask. Ave.) more beautiful than a rotation of boxcars,” said Annand during his presentation. “This isn’t necessarily the final plan. It hasn’t been exposed to public consultation.”
Crosby, Hanna and Associates, a landscape architecture and planning company based out of Saskatoon, provided a conceptual design for the proposed project.
The Saskatchewan Avenue Park Project committee is a subcommittee of the Communities in Bloom committee.
According to information provided to the city, the projected cost of the project is $374,134.73.
“There are many alternatives to writing a cheque for paying for this project,” said Annand.
He said the work of the committee has been completed. However, Annand said some committee members may be willing to help with the project on an ongoing basis.
“That help may include fundraising. It may include volunteer labour,” said Annand. “I feel it is now in the hands of the city to take the lead on this project. They have to provide the leadership to make it happen.”
The project was broken into three phases by the architectural company.
The first phase would include site preparation, site grading, asphalt paving, site furnishings and landscaping.
The second phase would include asphalt paving, unit paving and irrigation among other things.
The third phase would include irrigation and site furnishings.
According to the current designs, the park would include a playground area and a walking path. It would also include signage about CN railway, regional agriculture information and Melfort information.
“If people would like to see this happen, they should tell their city representatives,” said Annand.
