Works on new sports complex in Kirkop begin
Works on the construction of a new sports complex in Kirkop, next to the St.Benedict’s College, have been commenced.
The complex, which is the second one in Malta after the Cottonera Sports Complex since the Law on Sports was implemented, will cater for the needs of the residents and students of schools in the area as well as sports organisations.
The Complex will be complemented by a six-lane, 200-metre long athletics track and a 9-aside pitch with artificial turf which have already been constructed at St.Benedict’s College.
Various sports disciplines could be practiced at the Complex, including basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton, football and athletics.
Moreover, the Complex will also have a gym, changing rooms and showers, together with a conference hall and administrative offices.
Covering an area exceeding 5,000 square metres, of which 2,300 square metres will be used for the building while the rest will be used for landscaping and a car park, the new Complex would also be able to host international events in some of the sports disciplines.
KMS launches two new sport programmes
Meanwhile, the Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport (KMS) has also launched two new sport programmes for young people.
The Girls on the Move Programme is aimed at young females between the ages of 9 and 14, focusing on providing recreation in a two-hour programme of activities on a weekly basis in a safe and supportive environment.
The Community Sports Programme is a national programme and will take the form of an after-school programme with sessions held once a week.
“Young people will gain much through well-organised sport programmes. They will develop healthier and active lifestyles, learn how to work within a team, aim for success and how to work hard to achieve goals,” Minister for Education, Youth and Employment Louis Galea said.
