“I believe the home is truly the heart of the family,” said interior designer, Maryann Mathison.

When it comes time to update look and feel of your home where do you start? the expert designers at the salt lake parade of homes gave us a few tips on what they do to decorate a home.

“You really want to start with an inspiration piece. I find that the easiest thing for a client to do,” Mathison said.

That inspiration piece can be a piece of art work you love or an heirloom that’s been past down from generation to generation.

Another option is to start at the front of the house and work your way back.

“I just think the entry way is my favorite part of the home on an home. It just says a lot about the house,” said Heidi Hasleton, HT Homes designer.

Different wood tones can give your home a rustic warm look which designers say has been very popular in the last couple of years.

“We see a lot of hand scraped woods in the dark rich tones which gives it a lot of flavor and interest a really cozy warm look that makes a home a really special place,” Mathison said.

Arranging windows to let in more natural light can add a silent beauty you just can’t get with artificial light.

“We have views surrounding the house. We have city views and mountain views and we wanted to take it all in with windows,” said Hasleton.

Designer experts say don’t get overwhelmed with a total home make over.

Start with one room or project and work your way throughout your house.
