Japanese Apricot Flower Festival
The apricot flower festival will open in Maehwa Village in Kwangyang, South Cholla province, tomorrow.
Called the Gwangyang (Kwangyang) Maehwa Festival (Maehwa means Japanese apricot flower), it will run to March 25.
With 1 million Japanese apricot trees on 300,000-pyong (990,000 square meters) of land, the village has Korea’s largest colony of maehwa.
Visitors can walk on five trails surrounded by the flowers on mountains and along the banks of the Somjin River. Music concerts, traditional Korean performances and Japanese apricot tea tasting are part of the festival’s program.
Cheong Masil Farm (green Japanese apricot farm) is located at the top of the village. The farm was the location for “Chonnyonhak’’ (Crane of 1,000 Years), 100th movie of the Korean film master Im Kwon-taek. The farm set up lighting, so visitors can enjoy the flowers, straw-roofed houses and soy sauce jars at night as well.
