Get the kitchen and cook for your pet
April 04, 2007 By: Momoy Category: Home & DecorationIf the current pet food recalls, leave you confused and wary about what to foods buy for your pet. Stop using those bags and cans and make your own. Not for you silly — your pet.
Making your own pet food is economical too. But remember you need to prepare and assemble with the same food safety procedures you would use for you and your family.
Here are some suggestions from various online resources. Be cautious. Ask your vet about your pets nutritional needs and before tweaking recipes with vitamins or minerals. Think of your vet as a pet nutritionist, not just the person who gives them those annual shots.
Sauteed liver. Heat 1 teaspoon corn oil. Add 1/4 pound beef liver. Fry on both sides. Add 1/2 cup water and mix with browned bits. For dogs, cut liver into pieces and serve. For cats, grind liver in blender with pan juices.
Chicken soup for your pet’s soul: Simmer 1 chicken liver, 1 giblet, 1 chicken heart, 1 chicken neck, 2 cups water and 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley. When giblet is tender, remove bones. For dogs, chop meat and mix with kibble. For cats, grind in blender.

Go fish: Heat 1 teaspoon corn oil in skillet and fry 1 small mackerel until it flakes apart. Remove and cool. Pour 1/2 cup hot water into pan and mix with browned bits. Remove bones from fish and mix with juice. For dogs, serve in pieces with kibble. For cats, grind with pan juices.
Just for cats:
- In food processor, mix 1 cup chopped cooked chicken, 1/2 cup cooked rice, 1/2 cup chopped cooked broccoli and 1/4 cup chopped well-cooked carrots until very tender. Drizzle in enough chicken broth to hold everything together.
- Mix in a blender: 2 cans sardines packed in oil, 2/3 cup cooked rice, 2 chicken livers cooked in water and drained, 1/4 cup chopped parsley.
Just for dogs:
Heat oven to 300F. Lightly grease one cookie sheet. Dissolve 2 beef bouillon cubes in 3/4 cup boiling water and allow to cool. Combine 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 3/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder, 1 beaten egg, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, the cooled beef broth and 2 tablespoons brown sugar. Mix well and knead dough for 1 minute. On a floured surface roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out bone-shaped dog biscuits and place on cookie sheet. Bake 30 minutes and cool.
