Garden Accents a decorative treasure trove
April 08, 2007 By: Momoy Category: GardenLiz Schumacher’s gallery of high-end urns, sculptures, fountains and outdoor furniture in a hilltop warehouse overlooking West Conshohocken offers a garden for the senses, though not live plants.
Late in March, the gallery smelled of sweet hyacinth, the scent rising from bags of potpourri priced for the average joe at $14.
Definitely not for the average joe was a $19,500 bronze by West Coast sculptor Barbara Chew called Allegra. The rounded figure smiled from her pedestal, and so would any buyer who could afford her.
Everywhere were decorative objects of bronze, lead, fiberglass, stone, iron and cast sandstone, a material that mimics stone but is impervious to weather. One cast-stone beauty was a wall fountain with dual dolphins as spouts. For $1,040, it would fit perfectly in a secret garden, with water gurgling from a hidden pump.
Schumacher travels widely to select her wares. One imported figure of a reclining bronze pig cost $165, but there was also a $45 Malaysian glazed pottery planter in earth tones, suitable for colorful coleus.
Accents, Schumacher said, are the way gardeners show their personality in their gardens. Plants alone, she said, can’t do that.
