Spring flower show at Mt. Hope Farm April 11-12
The Bristol Garden Club will host a spring flower show at Mt. Hope Farm, 250 Metacom Ave., on Wednesday and Thursday, April 11 and 12. A general meeting will be held in the large barn at 1 p.m. The floral decorated Governor Bradford House will be open to the public from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 12.
The show is co-chaired by Vera Bowen and Vicki Iannuccillo and will feature floral arrangements and horticulture arranged and grown by members of the club. The theme is “Mt. Hope Treasures,” with classes focusing on the architectural aspects of the main structures on the farm, including the Governor Bradford House, pool house, barn, Cove Cabin and doll house. All 20 entries will be displayed in the Governor Bradford House, and local florists will donate arrangements to accompany the garden club entries.
Judging of the five classes is by nationally accredited master and life judges. Ribbons will be awarded in design and horticulture sections, with a Best of Show awarded in design. In the horticulture section, there also will be an Award of Horticulture Excellence, Award of Merit and Arboreal Award. A special Mt. Hope Farm Award will be selected by the president of the Mt. Hope Trust.
Admission is $5 and includes a tour of the house, built in 1745 by Isaac Royall and his wife, Elizabeth. It was later home to William Bradford, deputy governor of Rhode Island, who became a U.S. senator.
For tickets, call 254-1745. All proceeds from the show will benefit the farm, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
