Groovy garden gnomes go for glory
GARDEN gnomes in groovy get-ups will strut their stuff in a competition for glory this weekend.
The grand affair is part of the fifth annual Port Fairy Autumn Flower Show at St John’s Anglican Church.
Floral artist and co-organiser Margaret Laurence said the gnomes were a popular addition to the flower show and always drew a strong crowd.
“People dress their gnomes up in all sorts of outfits,” Ms Laurence said. “It’s very entertaining.”
More than 27 flower displays have been entered with the theme “thanksgiving”, which Ms Laurence said had forced entrants to use their imagination.
“People are using fruit, vegies and leaves as well as flowers to create their entries,” she said.
Accompanying the flowers and gnomes will be recitals on the fully restored Taylor pipe organ.
“Thanksgiving is being thankful for everything that we’ve got,” Ms Laurence said.
“It’s a nice way to be able to say thank you. The church lends itself to flower arranging. It is and absolute pleasure to be able to hold the flower show here.”
She said other Warrnambool floral and church groups had helped organise the event and had also contributed greatly to the entries.
The show will be on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
