Saving your spring flowers from the snow
The spring snow is bringing a smile to anyone who took the time to fertilize and aerate their lawn recently.
Garden Expert Rob Proctor says this spring snow is perfect timing for lawns in Colorado.
However, if you didn’t get out and fertilize yet, don’t panic because you still have time. If you take care of it on Sunday, you could be in luck because more snow is expected next week.
Proctor says spring snow seeps into the roots of our grass and helps build a hearty lawn. His advice: don’t water your lawn until mid-May, because the roots need time to grow.
He waters his lawn about May 15th, gives it a good soaking and then waters just once a week in the spring. He says this builds a thick and strong lawn that will stand up to Colorado’s dry and hot summer weather.
As for the trees, Proctor says we should leave them alone. He says flowering spring trees will stand up to the snow, and have endured their fair share of nature’s pruning during the snowy winter months. If the flower buds freeze, they won’t bloom again, but the tree should be fine.
Tulips and other perennials should also survive the snow. If you like, he suggests using a garbage can to cover them overnight. Otherwise, he says pick them and enjoy a pretty bouquet.
