Some brief details about Habitat:
Habitat was created in 1964 by Terence Conran. The first Habitat store was on London’s Fulham Street. Terence Conran, then a young furniture designer and restauranteur, took his starting point in furniture design as the desire to create an alternative to the dark furniture in his family home.
As Habitat came into being, so did the modern British, fashion-focused furniture trend. Habitat first drew attention for offering modern designs at reasonable prices.
Catalogues for Habitat furniture became in themselves somewhat of a phenomenon, and then started to be published in a variety of different languages. Habitat’s first foreign venture came in 1973, with the opening of a store in Paris Montparnasse. Currently, Habitat stores number 38 in England and Ireland, 24 in France, six in Spain, and four in Germany. It is involved in cooperative ventures in countries like Belgium, Iceland, Luxembourg, Thailand, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, and New Zealand.
In Istanbul, Habitat will offer customers nearly 3,000 different varieties of 75,000 items total.
Habitat works with its own team of designers, as well as with world famous designers to produce items which are modern, entertaining, and unlike anything you can find anywhere else. Among those who have designed for Habitat are Tom Dixon, who started working for Habitat in 1998 and is still Habitat’s creative director, as well as world known designers like Peter Blake, Eduardo Paolozzi, Tracey Emin, Robin Day, Shin and Tomoko Azumi, and Terence Woodgate.
Habitat embraces the principle that functional items can be beautiful and that beautiful items be functional. Some of Habitat’s most unforgettable presentations have been paper Japanese lamps, Chicken Brick made from terra cotta, and items like “Garland,” designed by Tod Boontje and bringing a new understanding to the world of lighting. Habitat is known to be a favorite among well-known stars, like Madonna, Guy Richie, Ewan McGregor, Kate Winslet and Jeremy Irons.
