Prepping for gardening success
It’s the time of year when many gardeners are itching to dig into the earth. While it’s still a little too early to set the seedlings in the soil, it’s not too early to start preparing for it.
For many people the passion is to create a little oasis in their own backyard.
Trevisanutto’s Greenhouse owner Dennis Trevisanutto advises gardeners to start their planting at the end of May or beginning of June, when the risk of frost is minimized and the weather isn’t too hot. He says it’s a good rule of thumb when choosing plants to buy for the garden, to go with the smaller ones.
”Well, when you’re out at the nurseries buying plants, you’re going to want to make sure that you buy short, kind of compact plants. You don’t want to plant anything that is tall and stressed, because usually it’ll just fall over and die.’
Trevisanutto says when deciding where to plant the seedlings, gardeners should check the all-important labels to see how much sun or shade the plant needs, and how much space it should have. Another important tip to ensure the seedlings grow well, is to make sure you have a good soil.
”When you’re getting a good soil, you want a good soil, you should be able to clump it with your hand, and it should break apart when you touch it like that, and that’s a good soil.”
Trevisanutto says if the soil is too hard, peat moss and manure can be added to loosen it up. Another important consideration for gardeners is they should make sure the soil is well-prepared before planting anything.
”The first thing you’re going to want to do, is get all the weeds out, turn over the soil a little bit, add your manure, peat mosses, fertilizers, mix it well into the soil. You know, rake it level, and let it sit for a little while before planting.”
It may still be a little too early to actually start planting, but its not too early to prep flower beds. The best approach is getting them ready a few weeks in advance of planting and then trying to be patient.
