It came from the clearance aisle: Beware of monster plants
Even liriope used as a ground cover too close to a pool enclosure can look unsightly when it pushes against the screening. Woodall says he leaves enough room to walk between the home and the plants. “It keeps the plants naturally attractive and they don’t have to be trimmed as often.”
When landscaping your home, also consider the level of maintenance you want to provide, advises White. Some high-maintenance plants that might need frequent spraying, waterings, feedings and grooming include roses, azaleas and annuals. Low-maintenance plants that, once established, might not even need watering include most trees, palms, viburnum, Asiatic jasmine and lantana.
“I have not irrigated my white and purple lantanas ever,” says White. “They are growing next to the drive, and they are gorgeous.”
