Gardening items and herbs sold at market
Area residents can still stock up on fresh herbs and decorations for their garden this weekend at the second annual herb market and sale sponsored by the Creativity Unlimited Arts Council.
The two-day event began Saturday and continues today from noon to 4 p.m. at the Arts Council office at 312 S. Dewey.
“We probably have 800 or 900 plants, and they’re going like crazy,” said Ruth Carson, arts council board member and event chairwoman. “We have all the culinary herbs.”
Carson said she grew about half of the fresh herbs herself while the remainder were grown by the relative of another board member who owns a greenhouse in Sidney.
In addition to herbs, Carson said they are selling specialty breads, bird nest gourds, plant markers and gardening aprons. A variety of garden decorations created by Wava Best are also available.
The Arts Council is raffling two special items at this year’s sale. The items were both created by members of the board of directors, including a fountain by Best and a painting by Patsy Smith
“Proceeds from the event all go to the Creativity Unlimited Arts Council building fund with the hopes of building an Art Center here in North Platte,” Carson said.
Smith said all of the items featured in this weekend’s sale were created by the board members. She noted interest in the arts council has grown significantly.
“It is catching on fire,” Smith said. “We encourage anyone who wants to join that loves the arts to be a part of this.”
The arts council sponsors several events throughout the year including an arts festival in the fall and literary festival. Last year the arts council organized a new children’s arts festival.
