‘Modern’ Interior Design made easy

Do you want to make a bold statement without saying a word, then minimalist styling is for you. Often called “Modern” or “Contemporary”, this style is clean, simple and uncluttered as shown in the illustrations. Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe coined the phrase “Less is more” and although this referred more to architecture such as eliminating walls (today’s open concept plan) and flattening and emphasizing a building’s frame, it is quoted to define this look.
Emphasis is put on interior architectural details. Interiors showcase space rather than things. It is therefore a good choice in an open concept home or one with diminutive proportions or lofts or even offices. It says current, of today, right now and is constantly evolving design.
The furniture is smooth, clean and geometric without curves or decoration perhaps using interesting materials such as metal, stone, and glass. Furniture is kept to a minimum. Sofas, chairs and ottomans have exposed legs and these plus beds have no skirt, trim or fringe.
Low tables and beds are especially appropriate. Upholstery and drapery fabric often has a natural textured look in linen, cotton, wool, silk and jute. Geometric or plain fabric is best. The colour palette consists of neutrals, black and white but punched up with accents of bright bold colour. Window treatments are also simple and clean looking.
Once considered cold by some, today’s contemporary interiors are comfortable and welcoming. Follow through to your kitchen and bathroom for a unified look. Remember to go basic, bare, bold and structural and no clutter please.
This last recommendation will probably be the hardest for some to accomplish but the reward will be great if you eliminate and pack up all those knickknacks, out of style lamps and pictures. Simplify your space and you will be surprised by the added benefit of a calmer more spacious environment.
Open space is just as important, if not more important, as the pieces you put in the space. Lighting is also an important element such as track lighting and recessed lighting plus pin point lights for art and large plants. Lighting fixtures should be sculptural with clean lines and perhaps a jolt of bold colour.
Follow these basic rules and you too can achieve a contemporary interior.
