Rare chance for tips on eco-friendly gardening
An eco-friendly garden in Whitchurch will hold two charity open days this weekend, giving visitors a chance to see rare plants and get advice on all manner of gardening and green issues.
Owned by garden designer and sustainability consultant Graham Burgess, Ninesprings Nursery sits on a natural spring and features hundreds of rare and water-loving plants.
Plants including watercress and reed beds are grown, as well as dozens of others rarely seen in British gardens such as the Chilean Butterburr, which has leaves over a foot wide.
The two-acre site also has Japanese trees and irises, vegetable and herb gardens and dozens of other plants from around the world.
Mr Burgess says: “Some people find it hard to believe, but anyone could grow most of the plants here – the plants like moisture but all you need is damp ground.
“There is a lot to see here and even if people take only a couple of ideas home with them, that will be great.”

Information on green schemes including solar energy systems and composting toilets will also be available, as well as demonstrations on how to compost properly.
The nursery is located in The Weir, off Winchester Street. The open days run on Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
Parking is available at the Sports Club on Winchester Street. For information call Graham on 01256 892837.
