Planting that’s topically tropical

July 06, 2007 By: Momoy Category: Garden No Comments →

With an unusually dry spring followed by monsoons across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in June, global warming is changing the way our gardens grow.

Many plants in Britain are tolerant of widely fluctuating temperatures, strong winds and heavy rainfall, but inevitably some species will begin to suffer while others thrive. One style of gardening which is eminently suited to the warmer, wetter conditions predicted for the future is sub-tropical bedding.

This is gardening at its most flamboyant. Using large-leaved architectural plants and brilliantly clashing flowers, it offers months of interest for the gardener and will attract hordes of bees and butterflies in late summer, too. By definition, it’s a style for the warmest months, using tender plants, so it is suitable for all areas of the country.

Gardening in containers is just blossoming

June 29, 2007 By: Momoy Category: Garden No Comments →

Container gardening has moved outdoors, becoming an important segment of the gardening industry and along the way evolving into unique landscape designs.

It’s “easy, fun, anybody can do it,” said Patty Rowland, a master gardener from Blakesburg. She “loves gardening; has always loved gardening.” As a little girl, she “potted weeds in pork and bean cans.”

“Choose the right light for the plant and don’t over water,” she said. Plants like differing amounts of light. Holes in the bottom or sides of the container to assure adequate drainage are a must.

Dark-colored plastic pots absorb solar heat so are a good choice for tomatoes, cannas or other warm-natured plants in a cool climate. But, they heat up in hot summer areas and cook the roots. To prevent overheating, shield pots with foil.

Gardening can be done cheaply

“The world laughs in flowers,” Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote. If that is true, then Mother Nature is laughing hysterically right now all over Michigan. Yes, it is that time of the year, and it seems like everything is in bloom. But beautiful landscaped gardens don’t just appear magically overnight. They take hard work and, often, lots of money. Still, you don’t have to go into hock to grow the perfect garden oasis.

The truth is, it doesn’t have to cost you a lot to make your garden gorgeous, says Sue Williams, the Frugal Gardner. “Most of my plants are from somewhere else, and I haven’t paid any money for them. I’ve traded for them, and I’ve scoured them up from places,” Williams says.

One of her favorite places to find free plants is online at popular sites such as craigslist.com and freecycle.com. At sites like these, you can post blogs, ask other gardeners specifically for what you need, or ask other gardeners what they want to get rid of. Either way, get ready for a huge response.
